About the loan EMI calculator
An Equated Monthly Instalment (EMI) is the fixed amount you pay your lender every month until a loan is repaid. Each EMI is part interest and part principal; early on, most of it goes towards interest.
Choose a loan type to load typical values, then adjust the amount, rate and tenure. The year-by-year schedule shows how your balance falls.
How to use it
- Move the sliders, or type a value into each box.
- Watch the results and chart update as you go.
- Try different assumptions to see what changes the outcome most, then talk to us about a plan.
The formula
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n ÷ [ (1 + r)n − 1 ]
- P: loan amount
- r: monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100)
- n: number of monthly instalments
Example
A home loan of ₹50,00,000 at 8.5% for 20 years has an EMI of about ₹43,391, and you would pay about ₹54,13,879 in interest over the term.
Loan EMI Calculator: common questions
A longer tenure lowers the EMI but increases the total interest. A larger down payment or a lower interest rate reduces both.
Yes. Part-prepayments reduce the outstanding principal, which cuts the interest you pay. Most floating-rate home loans for individuals have no prepayment charges; check your loan terms.
If your family would struggle to repay the loan without your income, a term plan that covers the outstanding amount protects them. See our life cover calculator.
