What is general insurance?
General insurance covers everything other than life insurance: your vehicle, home, travel, personal accidents and small business premises. Most policies run for one year and are renewed annually.
Each policy pays for a specific loss, such as damage, theft or medical costs abroad, up to the sum insured.
The risk general insurance addresses
Accidents, theft, fire and floods are sudden and expensive. Without cover, the repair or replacement cost comes straight out of your savings, and some covers, such as third-party motor insurance, are required by law.
Without it, you could face
- Expensive repairs after an accident
- Legal liability to third parties
- Loss of your home or belongings to fire, flood or theft
- Medical bills abroad with no cover
